Appropriations of Newton’s Mathematical Experimental Paradigm in the Dutch Republic

1710-1762

Researcher: Steffen Ducheyne

As is widely known, Dutch scholars were among the earliest adaptors of Newton’s natural philosophy. This subproject will investigate the appropriations of Hermaan Boerhaave, Willem Jacob ’s Gravensande and Pieter van Musschenbroek. These Leiden professors were instrumental in the spread of Newton’s ideas on the Continent. More particularly, this subproject aims at providing a comprehensive study of how they appropriated Newton’s natural philosophical ideas in their research and teaching, given their own agendas.
